Wednesday Watch: A Year Of The Selfie

One of the things that today’s mobile consumer is known for is the selfie. This is a photo taken of yourself, usually using the front-facing camera on your cellphone. There are variations of the selfie, usually based on the facial expression that one is making in the ‘selfie’.

For the past year, I’ve been using an app on my phone to take a selfie every day. That app is called PhotoCron, and it’s quite nifty. Every day, at 830am, I’ve set it up to pop up a reminder on my phone. When I click the notification, it opens the PhotoCron app, and prompts me to snap a photo. There’s even an on-screen outline for me to line my face up with, so that all my selfies are framed the same.

The framing is important because PhotoCron also includes the unique ability to build a video out of all these selfies, right within the app. Here’s mine:

Pretty cool, right? You can see the days where I was tired/annoyed/busy, and the ones where I felt like having a bit more fun with my selfie. PhotoCron also backs up to my Google Drive, so that when I swap phones, I don’t have to start over – I can just restore the backup and pick up where I left off.

My wife also setup PhotoCron, for herself, but also for our two daughters – it’s a great way to get a daily reminder to snap a photo, so we can see how their faces change as they grow up.
