A couple of months ago, I uninstalled the Facebook apps I had on my phone. It was only three – the actual Facebook app, the Messenger app, and the Pages Manager app. And it was the best decision I’ve made in a while (at least pertaining to apps and whatnot). Here’s why:
I primarily uninstalled them cause they’re HUGE, slow, suck down data (even when I’m not using them actively), and they suck down my battery life. There was also some permissions issues, but frankly, that was a small part of it.
The biggest reason, honestly, was the notifications. Good lord, the notifications. From the main app, I got notifications when someone interacted on any of my posts, whenever someone interacted on a post that I had interacted with, or when someone mentioned me. Which means I pretty much got notifications ALL FREAKING DAY. The Messenger app didn’t really notify me that much – my friends don’t normally use it. The Pages Manager app notified me of crap all day, too. Stupid crap, like a “reminder” to post something “engaging” every few hours. Thanks, Facebook, I wasn’t sure if I needed to do that or not……
So I just uninstalled them all, and replaced the shortcut I had for the main app with a bookmark to the mobile website (http://m.facebook.com). And it’s been amazing.
I no longer get instant notification if someone likes something somewhere. I no longer get stupid reminders of how to do my job. My phone is faster, uses less data, and I get better battery life. I also hate Facebook just a tiny bit less.
There’s been quite a bit of discussion about Facebook’s app permissions lately. While that wasn’t a factor in why I deleted the apps, it certainly helped me feel better about my decision.
I would strongly recommend this course of action to anyone. You can still use Facebook – their mobile site is actually quite impressive. You can even use messenger and manage your ‘pages’ if you’d like.
Do it. You know you want to.
i did the same, ditched the facebook app about two years ago, the messenger app was about 6 months ago and the pages app 2 months ago. The mobile site works great for me and as for notifications i use an ifttt for them. I also modified some of my settings to reduce the notifications i get for certain things
