The Trimming In Public series is a way for me to share my RSS feeds with you, while at the same time, cleaning the list out for feeds that are dead or no longer of interest. Hopefully, you’ll find something new along the way that you’d like to add to your subscriptions.
181. The Mobile Fanatics – I removed a blog from Mike Macias earlier, but I’m keeping this. Mobile Fanatics is Mike’s primary blog, and they cover nearly everything. I always said that I wished I’d registered Mobile-Guru.com instead of Symbian-Guru.com, so that I could turn it into something bigger. In any case, Mike and team do a great job of highlighting mobile news, and they tend to do better reviews and accessory highlights, which was something I focused on, myself.
Determination: KEEP
182. The Nokia Blog – When I started Symbian-Guru.com, there were a host of other sites that started around the same time. Mark and I are friends, but I always felt a friendly competition with The Nokia Blog. Fortunately for Mark and unfortunately for The Nokia Blog, Mark joined the team at Windows Phone Central in October 2013, so there’s no need to follow this site anymore.
Determination: ELIMINATE
183. The Nokia Cell Phone Blog – I don’t recall who Cary was (or if I still follow him/her elsewhere) but this site looks like it died shortly after the Nokia/Windows Phone announcement.
Determination: ELIMINATE
184. The Official Google Blog – The official blog of Google itself. Definitely a keeper.
Determination: KEEP
185. The Outsidr – This was the personal blog of Zach Epstein, but unfortunately he hasn’t updated it in over 7 months.
Determination: ELIMINATE
186. The Paleotechnologist – I believe Eric was someone I engaged with through my work at RadioShack. He writes regularly about technology, primarily digging into more nerdy stuff like Arduino and the ilk lately.
Determination: ELIMINATE
187. The Phoneboy Blog – Dameon is yet another ex-Nokian, and one that I’ve followed for years. We even had the chance to meet up for beers once. He’s a smart guy, and recently started near-daily podcasts, which is really cool. Phoneboy knows his way around, definitely a keeper.
Determination: KEEP
188. techspecs – RadioShack’s official blog (which I oversaw for several years). Unfortunately, while it looks nice, the content is a work-in-progress that will hopefully improve in 2014.
Determination: ELIMINATE
189. The Symbian Blog – The Handheld Blog is a merge between The Symbian Blog and The MeeGo Blog, both by Viabhav. It’s good, but largely still focused on Symbian and Windows Phone, neither of which I’m particularly interested in any longer.
Determination: ELIMINATE
190. The Symbian Touch – No clue, but the whole thing is in French, and I can’t reach French.
Determination: ELIMINATE
191. The Typing Monkey – I have no idea what this site is or how it got in my feeds.
Determination: ELIMINATE
192. The Verge – The Verge is, without question, one of my favorite sites on the Internet. For starters, they have killer tech coverage, and they do really good in-depth pieces. I disagree with their expansion into other topics, but that’s easily ignored. The other reason I love The Verge is that their branding is unique, memorable, and most of all, consistent. I’m also friends with several of the writers/editors, and they’re all great guys.
Determination: KEEP
193. The World Won’t Listen – Blog mainly about hardware, software, and other nerdy things. Sadly, hasn’t been updated since November 2012.
Determination: ELIMINATE
194. The Social Skinny – Social-focused blog that actually does a decent job of highlighting tips/tricks/best practices within social. Posts regularly, but not annoyingly so, and isn’t overly ninja.
Determination: KEEP
195. This Is My Next – This was the temporary home of The Verge while they figured out WTF they were going to call themselves. They’ve since re-opened it, sort of, as a reviews aggregation site, but most of their reviews are also posted to The Verge, so I’ll get them there.
Determination: ELIMINATE
196. tnkgrl Mobile – Myriam (aka Tnkgrl) is a tech blogger of the highest caliber. She was at Engadget for a while, and is currently the Product Evangelist for Pebble smartwatches. She’s a bit cooky, but a really smart woman, and I’m glad to catch up with her any chance I get.
Determination: KEEP
197. TruBlog – Truphone was a VOIP client that I used for Symbian devices, but have no need for it, nor its blog.
Determination: ELIMINATE
198. TUAW – The Unofficial Apple Website. Kept around mainly for work purposes, though they tend to provide humorous coverage of Apple product announcements and launches. Since I don’t work at RadioShack anymore, I don’t really need this.
Determination: ELIMINATE
199. Us Vs Th3m – A completely useless blog that aims to post “original, slightly topical, Internet LOLZ”. It’s in my ‘memes’ feed category, and is only kept for comic relief in my RSS reader.
Determination: KEEP
200. What Should We Call Social Media – Random GIFs expressing issues that face Community Managers around the world. Essentially useless, but a nice comic relief for my feeds.
Determination: KEEP
